"What's your capacity?"
Dr. Deloris Mitchell was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Biopsychology from Simmons University, followed by a master’s degree in Human Services with a specialization in Counseling from Capella University. She later completed her PhD in Psychology with a focus on education at Capella University. In addition to her academic achievements, Dr. Mitchell holds certifications as an Infant Family Specialist, C.A.N.S., and EEC Director II. With over 25 years of experience in education and counseling, Dr. Mitchell has worked across diverse settings, including early childhood education, K–12 schools, higher education, and hospital environments. This extensive background has equipped her to effectively support educators and parents in understanding and addressing the needs of children who exhibit challenging behaviors. She emphasizes the use of developmentally appropriate, sustainable interventions tailored to each child’s unique needs. Dr. Mitchell’s scholarship further reflects her dedication to the field. Her research, “Understanding the Experiences of Educators Who Remain in the Profession: A Grounded Theory Study,” introduced the Metacognitive Theory of Teacher Agency, a framework that explores how teachers’ reflective practices shape decision-making and resilience. Acknowledging that up to 16% of children ages 0–5 face emotional, behavioral, and social challenges that may hinder development, Dr. Mitchell champions the role of psychoeducation, coaching, and evidence-based strategies. Through her work, she strives to empower educators, strengthen family partnerships, and create supportive learning environments that foster resilience, well-being, and long-term success for children.
